Los Angeles Angels: Billy Eppler Breaks Down The Trade For Maybin
The Los Angeles Angels acquired an outfielder from Detroit in an effort to fill the gap at the left field position. The Angels GM said it was an objective before the winter meetings.
The Los Angeles Angels have found a player to take on left field. Even though he has played a majority of his career as a center fielder. Cameron Maybin will be one of the Angels in Anaheim next season.
Maybin was acquired from the Detroit Tigers for Minor League pitcher Victor Alcantara. The Angels will also grab Maybin’s $9 million option for 2017. On the surface, this seems like a good deal for the Angels.
Angels GM Billy Eppler spoke to mlb.com’s Chad Thornburg, saying:
This was something that was clearly an objective of ours heading into the winter. We’ve been able to acquire a guy that we are happy to put in left field and give him an opportunity to play every day. That’s what we’re hopeful he’ll be able to do.”
There is some concern about Maybin who has had some injury issues lately. The 29-year old North Carolina native missed 94 games last year due to a combination of a broken wrist and a broken thumb.
One thing is clear about this deal, Eppler is making calls and moves. This is completely different than the trade deadline, where nothing happened until the very last moment. You can expect for the Angels to continue adding players to the roster.
While Maybin isn’t a bad pick-up for the Angels, the Angels still have to concentrate on pitching. This is the one aspect of the offseason I really want to see addressed. Since Eppler is already making moves, it shows that maybe the Angels will bring in a notable pitcher or two.
