CONVERTED OUTFIELDER

Former outfielder Jason Lane gets the starting nod for the Padres against the Dodgers. The 38-year-old lefty is pitching in place of right-hander Ian Kennedy, who will throw in a minor league game to avoid facing a division rival.

V-MART SWINGS

Detroit's Victor Martinez is scheduled to test his surgically repaired knee in his second big league exhibition game. He will serve as the designated hitter again. ''His timing is a little off,'' manager Brad Ausmus said.

HEALED HAND

Marlins manager Mike Redmond said outfielder Christian Yelich is on the travel squad for their game against Detroit at Lakeland, Florida, after sitting out two days with a blister on his hand.

RANGERS NEED PITCHING

Rangers left-hander Ross Detwiler will start against the Reds in his first appearance since March 13 when he was hit in the right wrist by a line drive. Texas' starting rotation has been beset by injuries this spring, including a season-ending elbow injury for ace Yu Darvish.

READY TO RUN

Cubs infielder Starlin Castro is expected to return to action against the Mariners in Peoria, Arizona, after taking a day to rest his tight right groin.
