LEADING OFF: Cano's head, McCutchen exam, Matz debut
A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:
---
ROBBY'S NOGGIN
The Mariners will find out if star second baseman Robinson Cano can play after he was smacked on the left temple as the Los Angeles Angels' infielders were getting loose for the seventh inning of a 4-2 win Saturday. Cano had a big welt on his head after rookie shortstop Taylor Featherston's high throw over first baseman Albert Pujols hit him. Cano left the game and was examined for a concussion, but tests were negative. Manager Lloyd McClendon was optimistic Cano would be able to play against the Angels.
OUCH!
Pirates star center fielder Andrew McCutchen will be re-evaluated, a day after he was hit in the left elbow by a fastball from Atlanta's Julio Teheran and exited the game. X-rays on the 2013 NL MVP were negative. McCutchen has been hit eight times this season, including two games in a row.
MEET THE MATZ
Steven Matz makes his major league debut as the latest - and perhaps last - in a line of highly touted young pitchers to come through the Mets' minor league system. The 24-year-old lefty starts at Citi Field against Cincinnati. He was leading the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League in ERA, strikeouts and innings, and was tied for the most wins at Triple-A Las Vegas.
PUIG POISED
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly expects right fielder Yasiel Puig to be in the starting lineup for the series finale at Miami. Puig has been held out of the starting lineup for the past four games with a callus in his left palm.
HELP, PLEASE
World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner has a 1.93 ERA in his past three starts, and has wound up with a loss in each of them as San Francisco scored a combined two runs. The Giants hope to back their ace when they host Colorado.
PLAYING NICE
The Royals and A's try to wrap up their series in Oakland without incident. They've already played two calm games at the Coliseum. When they met in KC in April, they became embroiled in three straight altercations.
ON THE MEND
Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, sidelined since May 19 because of a sprained right knee, will work out before the game in Houston. The team wants to see if he's ready for a rehabilitation assignment.
