Knee injury will sideline Ethier

Published Sep. 8, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier will miss the final weeks of the season because of his sore right knee, manager Don Mattingly said Thursday.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Ethier will travel to Birmingham, Ala., Friday to seek a second opinion on his knee from renowned specialist Dr. James Andrews.

Over the weekend Mattingly said Ethier had chosen to play through the pain, already knowing the knee would need to be operated on after the season.

The 29-year-old was hitting .311 at the All-Star break, propelling him to his second straight All-Star Game selection.

But the balky knee has slowed Ethier to a .252 average since the break, including a 3-for-41 slump last month.

Los Angeles trails Arizona by 12 games in the NL West.
