Jose Bautista resumes throwing, says 'it's a work in progress'

Published May. 19, 2015 12:26 a.m. ET

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista hasn't played in the field since April 21, but took the first step towards returning Monday afternoon. Before the game against the Los Angeles Angels, Bautista played some light toss in the batting cages.

This would all seem like positive news, but he admitted to reporters that it will be a long recovery process:

“I can’t be too pessimistic about it, but it’s a work in progress. Just a light throwing session, very short distance, very minimal effort. Just trying to get the motion down and that will start the progression so we’ll see how it goes. If I have anything new to report . . . I’ll let you guys know, but everything’s the same.”

Bautista has been productive as a DH-only, hitting .294 with three homers and 13RBI in his last 21 games since April 21, but there's no doubt the Blue Jays would like him back to 100 percent.
