Jays claim 1B Mauro Gomez off waivers

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed first baseman Mauro Gomez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
Gomez made his major league debut last season with Boston, hitting .275 with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 37 games.
The 6-foot-2, 230-pound native of the Dominican Republic has a .281 average in the minor leagues with 130 home runs and 512 RBIs over nine seasons.
To make room on the 40-man roster Monday, the Blue Jays designated right-hander David Bush for assignment.

The Red Sox designated Gomez for assignment on March 31.
