Iwakuma set for rehab stint as injury comeback continues

Published Jun. 17, 2015 12:14 p.m. ET

The long journey of Hisashi Iwakuma continues, as the Seattle Mariners' right-hander is still awaiting a return to the pitching mound.

Greg Johns of MLB.com reported on Monday that 'Kuma, who has been out since April 23rd dealing with a strained lat muscle, will begin a rehab stint this Saturday with Class-A Short Season Everett. Iwakuma threw a 40-pitch simulated game session on Monday, and the results were good enough to allow him to continue on in his rehabilitation.

Manager Lloyd McClendon told Johns of the club's plans for the pitcher: "He threw three innings and each inning went better. He'll go to Everett to begin his rehab. Hopefully we'll get 40-50 pitches out of him and then re-evaluate after that."

Barring any further setbacks, Johns says Iwakuma could return to the M's rotation in early July.
