Injured umpire Rapuano taking a few days off

Published Apr. 22, 2010 12:51 a.m. ET

Umpire Ed Rapuano is sitting out the final two games of the Yankees-Athletics series after taking a foul ball off his facemask.

Rapuano was hit during Tuesday night's game. The A's say that Rapuano will take a few days off as a precaution. Pacific Coast League umpire Mike Muchlinski was called up to replace Rapuano.

Rapuano was the plate umpire when he was hit in the chin by Kevin Kouzmanoff's foul. Rapuano stayed in the game for another batter, then walked off the field.

A's athletic trainer Steve Sayles followed Rapuano toward the umpires' locker room, and the teams cleared the field. Rapuano went to a hospital for a CT span, and was alert when he left the ballpark.
