Indians starter Josh Tomlin has failed to make it out of the fifth inning for the first time in his career, falling one game short of setting a record.
Tomlin had gone at least five innings in his first 37 career starts, becoming one of only two pitchers to do so since 1919. He was one game away from having the record to himself when the Mariners scored four runs in the fifth Wednesday to take a 6-2 lead.
After Wily Mo Pena's two-run double, Indians manager Manny Acta went to the mound to get Tomlin, who received a nice ovation as he left the field.
Tomlin shares the mark with former Indians pitcher and current Toronto manager John Farrell.
