Indians option Brantley to Columbus

Published Apr. 19, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The Cleveland Indians have optioned outfielder Michael Brantley to Triple-A Columbus so they can activate first baseman Russell Branyan.

Brantley began the season as Cleveland's starting left fielder, but only because Branyan, who signed a $2 million contract with the Indians in February, was on the disabled list with a herniated disk in his back.

Branyan is expected to be activated on Tuesday, when the Indians open a three-game series in Minneapolis against the Twins.

Brantley was batting just .156 (5-for-32) with 1 double and 3 RBIs in nine games. He was acquired in 2008 from Milwaukee in the deal for CC Sabathia.

With Branyan expected to start at first, the Indians likely will platoon Matt LaPorta and Austin Kearns in left.
