Indians get RHP Rogers from Rockies for cash

Published Jun. 12, 2012 7:20 p.m. ET

The Cleveland Indians have acquired right-hander Esmil Rogers from the Colorado Rockies for cash, hoping the reliever can get turned around in the American League.

The trade was completed shortly before the Indians started a three-game series against intrastate rival Cincinnati on Tuesday. A roster move will be made when Rogers joins the team.

Rogers went 0-2 with an 8.06 ERA in 23 appearances for Colorado this season. The Rockies were out of options on the 26-year-old pitcher.

He'll join a bullpen that ranks third-to-last in the AL with a 4.05 ERA.

The Indians also designated catcher Luke Carlin for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster. The 31-year-old catcher has spent most of the season at Triple-A Columbus, batting .231 with two homers in 23 games.
