Holliday hosts Pujols Family Foundation Golf Tournament

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:03 p.m. ET

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, on the disabled list with a torn right quadriceps muscle, is planning on testing the muscle out and running for the first time in the near future.

"See how it goes over the next week and gradually work in some running and build it up to full speed," Holliday told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Everything else is going really well."

The Cardinals want to see how Holliday's body reacts to running before setting any set of target return date, but manager Mike Matheny is pleased with the progress so far.

"Whenever our guys are in the mindset of let's go, I'm ready to push it and to start putting a finish line out there, it's always a good thing," Matheny said.

Despite Holliday's absence from the Cardinals' line-up, he' still been receiving a lot of votes for the All-Star game and while he likely wouldn't be able to play in the contest, Holliday is appreciate of the votes and would make to trip to Cincinnati.

"It's still two weeks away," Holliday said. "I'm not (sure) where I'll be at that point, but if I get voted in I'll be there."
