Heath Bell out with calf injury

Published Feb. 15, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell is sidelined with a strained left calf and won't participate in spring training workouts until at least the weekend.

Bell, second in the NL with 47 saves last season, missed Tuesday's bullpen session.

Padres manager Bud Black said that Bell injured his calf before taking the field for Monday's first workout.

Bell was 6-1 with a 1.93 ERA last year. He finished eighth in voting for the NL Cy Young Award.
