Hahn wins third straight, A's beat Angels 4-1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Jesse Hahn's hopes of closing out the eighth inning ended when he walked Angels slugger Mike Trout on six pitches.

It was about the only thing the Oakland right-hander didn't finish - a much-needed break for the Athletics' weary bullpen.

Hahn pitched into the eighth inning for his third consecutive win, Josh Reddick hit a tiebreaking double in the sixth and the Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 on Saturday afternoon despite committing their majors-leading 70th error.

''On a day when we probably didn't have a few guys available down there, and after last night, we needed our starter to go deep in the game and hold them down,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''He did every bit of that.''

Hahn (5-5) allowed one run and four hits in 7 2-3 innings. He struck out four and walked four while winning for the first time in six starts this season against teams from the AL West.

That allowed Melvin to avoid going to his bullpen after using five relievers in the final three innings of a 12-7 loss.

''I was hoping I could finish the eighth there,'' Hahn said. ''That's my fault for walking him, but that was good to get into the eighth there and let our pen rest a little bit.''

Hahn labored early and had to pitch out of jams early when the Angels put two runners in scoring position with two outs in both the second and third. He settled down to retire eight straight until Los Angeles scored in the sixth.

The A's, who committed four errors in Friday night's loss, backed Hahn with mostly solid defense. Left fielder Ben Zobrist made a sliding catch of Matt Joyce's short fly to left in the fourth, and Marcus Semien - who leads the majors with 22 errors - turned a pair of double plays.

One day after blowing a five-run lead with ace Sonny Gray on the mound in a 12-7 loss, the A's pounded out five doubles - three in the three-run sixth.

Rookie Billy Burns had two infield hits to raise his AL-leading mark to 21 while Stephen Vogt added three hits for Oakland, which won for only the second time in the last seven games between the two teams.

Tyler Clippard retired four batters for his 11th save.

The A's went into the game having committed 13 more errors than any other team in the majors but played well behind Hahn until third baseman Brett Lawrie bounced a throw to first baseman Ike Davis in the eighth.

Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the first on back-to-back doubles by Marcus Semien and Vogt.

Los Angeles tied it on Erick Aybar's RBI single in the sixth.

Reddick, mired in a 3-for-27 funk, doubled down the left field line in the sixth to drive in Ben Zobrist with the go-ahead run. Lawrie followed with a two-out double to make it 3-1 and chase Angels starter Jered Weaver.

Weaver (4-8) allowed four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander has lost his last four starts.

''There's no doubt he wasn't as crisp today as he has been before,'' Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. ''Just trying to get a fastball in to some decent zones has been a challenge for him the last couple times. It was this afternoon.''

Josh Phegley hit the first pitch from reliever Cam Bedrosian down the third base line for another RBI double.

BURNS RED HOT

With leadoff hitter Coco Crisp having missed much of the season with a variety of injuries, Billy Burns has turned out to be more than an adequate replacement. Burns has an 11-game hitting streak, has hit safely in 23 of the last 24 and went into the day leading AL rookies in hits, stolen bases and multi-hit games.

''It's tough to even describe how important he's been for us,'' Melvin said. ''(Crisp), that's a guy we not only rely on to be our leadoff guy and hold down that position but a guy that got clutch hits for us, he stole bases for us. Billy's doing all that.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Angels: RHP Mike Morin (left oblique strain) will begin a rehab assignment Monday in Arizona. Morin has been on the disabled list since May 24.

Athletics: Davis (quad strain) started for the second straight game since coming off the disabled list but left for a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

UP NEXT

Angels: RHP Garrett Richards (7-4), who pitches the series finale Sunday, has allowed just two earned runs over his last 14 innings after getting shelled in his start against the New York Yankees on June 6 when he gave up six runs while retiring just two batters.

Athletics: LHP Scott Kazmir (3-4) has a 1.27 ERA at home this season and a 4.20 mark on the road.
