Published May. 24, 2015 3:20 p.m. ET

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray has left his start early because of a bruised right ankle.

Gray was replaced by Dan Otero after the fifth inning in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Gray was hit in the lower leg by James Loney's grounder in the fourth inning, but remained in the game after being looked at by a team trainer.

Tampa Bay outfielder Steven Souza Jr. left in the third because of a sprained left wrist, which occurred while swinging at a Gray pitch.
