Giants feature homegrown starting infield for first time in decades
With the MLB Draft taking place today through Wednesday, Giants fans have reason to be optimistic about the scouting department and the talent that has filtered its way to AT&T Park through recent Drafts. Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News points out that the Giants have a homegrown infield for the first time in decades. It’s a good one too. Writing about second baseman Joe Panik, who was drafted 29th overall in 2011, Baggarly writes:
He’s one of four homegrown, high achievers on the Giants infield, alongside first baseman Brandon Belt (5th round, 2009), shortstop Brandon Crawford (4th round, 2008) and rookie third baseman Matt Duffy (18th round, 2012).
In addition to these infielders, catcher Buster Posey -- the fifth overall pick in 2008 -- also developed through the Giants’ minor league system. The Giants also drafted pitcher Madison Bumgarner 10th overall in 2007. Since the dawn of free agency teams have tried to buy their way to a championship overnight, but the Giants have proven that you can still do it the old-fashioned way.
