Former New York Yankees right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo agreed to a one-year, $950,000 contract with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League.

Albaladejo, who was released by the Yankees a week ago, spent the past three seasons with New York and had a 3.97 ERA in 10 games and 11 1-3 innings this year.

Giants manager Tatsunori Hara said Albaladejo gives his team some options: ''He has the ability to start or come on in relief,'' Hara said. ''His role will depend on the situation of the team.''

Albaladejo spent much of the season as the closer for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
