So far, Tigers see Scherzer as starter — 2:29 a.m.
The Tigers have made tentative plans to use Max Scherzer as a starting pitcher in 2010, multiple people in the industry said late Tuesday.
Scherzer is the primary pitcher Detroit will obtain in the three-team trade with the Yankees and Diamondbacks, which will be finalized as soon as the exchange of medical records is complete.
Scherzer has pitched as both a reliever and starter in Arizona. He pitched exclusively as a starter this year, going 9-11 with a 4.12 ERA. But the Diamondbacks viewed him as a reliever in the long term.
The Tigers, however, hope he can replace Edwin Jackson in their rotation, joining Justin Verlander and Rick Porcello among the top three spots. (Jackson, an All-Star this year, will be sent to Arizona in the deal.) Detroit will have control of Scherzer, 25, for five more seasons before he becomes a free agent. -- Jon Paul Morosi
