Ellsbury activated, back in leadoff for Red Sox

Published Aug. 5, 2010 12:33 a.m. ET

The Boston Red Sox have activated outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury from the 15-day disabled list.

Ellsbury was in center field for Wednesday night's game against the Cleveland Indians and batting leadoff. He received a big cheer before his first at-bat, when he popped out to second base.

Ellsbury has been on the disabled list since May 28 with broken ribs.

Outfielder Daniel Nava was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for Ellsbury.

Ellsbury had played in only nine games this season. He missed most of April and May with a rib injury that he reinjured when he returned.
