Dodgers add lefty Paul Maholm to pitching staff

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers increased their already considerable pitching depth, agreeing to a $1.5 million, one-year contact with left-hander Paul Maholm.

Even before the deal was announced, Maholm was in the clubhouse Saturday when pitchers and catchers reported to the team's Arizona spring training facility. His name was even on a locker, temporarily, but it was removed later.

Maholm declined to talk to reporters, and the announcement was made later in the day.

The 31-year-old pitcher was 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA in 26 starts for the Atlanta Braves last season. Maholm has a career record of 76-95 in 243 major league appearances.

The agreement increases the Dodgers' projected luxury tax payroll to $253 million for 25 players, including the midpoint of closer Kenley Jansen's salary arbitration figures and an estimated $11.5 million in benefits.
