Different sport: Dungy speaks to Yankees
Taking a playbook page from a different sport, the Yankees brought in Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy to address players.
Dungy spoke to the World Series champions before Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes said Dungy talked ''about preparing for what's ahead of us'' and that the speech was ''more life experiences'' than sports.
''There's a lot of new faces that weren't here last year,'' Hughes said.
New York manager Joe Girardi had sprinter Michael Johnson address the team earlier this year and had been trying to arrange a Dungy speech for awhile.
''We tried to have him come in at spring training, and it's never really matched up,'' Girardi said. ''It was a real treat.''
Dungy coached Indianapolis to the 2007 Super Bowl title and left after the 2008 season. He is working as an NBC analyst.
''I admire him tremendously for his faith, his beliefs, the type of man he is, the type of family man, the type of coach,'' Girardi said. ''I've read his books. I subscribe to his website.''
