Diamondbacks' Pollock to miss time, Herrmann needs surgery

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:30 p.m. ET

PHOENIX (AP) Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock has a strained groin and could be out for the rest of the season.

Pollock was hurt running out a fly ball early in Friday night's game against San Francisco, and an MRI on Saturday revealed the extent of the injury. Arizona manager Chip Hale said the injury is treatable but it could be at least a week before he can resume physical activity.

''It could be the end of the season. We're not going to put him back out there until he's 100 percent,'' Hale said.

Pollock made his season debut two weeks ago after being activated from the 60-day disabled list following his recovering from a broken right elbow suffered in the spring. He is hitting .303 in his last 10 games after starting out 0 for 8.

''He was running straight ahead and he just felt it tighten up,'' Hale said. ''Physically it stinks for him, but I think on the mental side it's still difficult, because A.J. was feeling great. He was really enjoying being a part of the club on the field.''

The Diamondbacks will definitely be without backup catcher Chris Herrmann for the rest of the season after he broke two bones in his left hand sliding into second base during Friday night's game. Herrmann will need surgery.

Herrmann was looking at more time behind the plate after coming off the disabled list last week following his recovery from a hamstring injury.
