Former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter believes former franchise owner George Steinbrenner III deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.

"Do I think (Steinbrenner) should be (in the Hall of Fame)? Of course. I think he's arguably one of the greatest owners in all of sports," Jeter said. “Why he's not, you have (to ask) some guys that vote."

Former Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and longtime executive John Schuerholz were added to the Hall of Fame by the 16-person Today's Game Era Committee. The Committee format is the only way for managers, umpires and executives to be added into Cooperstown.

In order to be inducted, the candidate must receive votes on at least 12 of the 16 ballots. Steinbrenner has been on the ballot for the third time and received fewer than five votes.

Steinbrenner passed away in 2010. After purchasing the team in 1973 for $8.8 million, the Yankees won seven World Series titles and 11 pennants.

His son Hal Steinbrenner has taken over the team since his father's death.
