Cubs' Soriano will have knee surgery this month

Published Sep. 5, 2009 3:05 p.m. ET

Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano says he will have arthroscopic knee surgery this month after manager Lou Piniella's decision Friday to shut him down.

"Lou said it's not good to play on one leg," Soriano told The Chicago Tribune. "I was 80 percent, but now I'm down to 50 or 60 percent. I play with my (left) knee on my mind, and I'm scared to get hurt."

The surgery would sideline Soriano for at least two weeks, the paper reported.

Soriano is hitting .241 with 20 home runs and 55 RBIs this season. He has tailed off to .182 with one homer and seven RBIs since Aug. 1.
