Cubs reveal starting rotation; Samardzija doesn't make it

Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny beat out Jeff Samardzija and Sean Marshall for the Chicago Cubs' final two rotation spots in a spirited spring competition.

Manager Lou Piniella on Friday also announced the composition of his bullpen: right-handers Samardzija, Carlos Marmol, Esmailin Caridad and Justin Berg, and lefties Marshall, John Grabow and James Russell.

Piniella, who named Caridad and Grabow as the primary setup men for closer Marmol, said GM Jim Hendry is trying to acquire a veteran reliever to help the young relief corps.

When Ted Lilly, who had offseason shoulder surgery, comes off the disabled list in mid-April, Piniella will have to choose between Silva and Gorzelanny for the No. 5 starter.
