Cardinals reportedly pursuing Gordon after missing out on Heyward

As the ink dries on Jason Heyward's eight-year, $184 million contract with the Chicago Cubs, the St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly expected to make a run at Alex Gordon to fill his place in the outfield.

It was rumored by FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal that the Cardinals were the mystery team that offered Heyward a near $200 million contract, along with the Washington Nationals. While Gordon will command less with his free agency, St. Louis has the financial flexibility to earn his talents.

Along with the Cardinals, Gordon has drawn interest from clubs such as the San Fransisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels with the Kansas City Royals also looking to re-sign him.

Should the Cardinals sign Gordon, they will likely have extra money to spend on another free agent, such as another starting pitcher, since the funds were originally allocated to signing Heyward and perhaps even David Price, who signed with the Boston Red Sox.

According to predictions, Gordon could earn $105 million for up to five years, which could be considered a high price for the outfielder considering he will be 32 in February. However, due to his age, the market should be less competitive than the prices other outfielder free agents such as Yoenis Cespedes and Justin Upton will be asking.
