Cardinals place right-hander Lynn on 60-day DL

Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL after the team decided he couldn't recover from an oblique injury in time.

St. Louis also purchased the contract of outfielder Shane Robinson from Triple-A Memphis, adding defense with a right-handed bat in center field in time for Friday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Allen Craig has started a handful of games in center with one glaring mistake, misplaying a ball that would have given Milwaukee's Ryan Braun an inside-the-park home run had Braun not stumbled twice between third and home on Wednesday night. Manager Tony La Russa said Craig, who's more comfortable at the corner spots, could play center again in September.

Lynn has been on the DL since Aug. 10 after injuring his left side making a pitch. He had developed into a consistent setup men and was 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 18 games, all but two of them in relief.

''We just don't think there'd be enough time and the risk was not worth the reward,'' La Russa said ''Better off that he heal completely and have a good offseason program.

''We're already into September and he still isn't in shape.''

La Russa thought another right-handed reliever, Eduardo Sanchez, would be back this month. Sanchez was placed on the 15-day DL with a shoulder injury on June 13 and transferred to the 60-day at the trade deadline after the Cardinals acquired shortstop Rafael Furcal.

La Russa didn't think Brandon Dickson, called up from Memphis to start Thursday at Milwaukee, would get any more starts.

The manager did not expect pitching coach Dave Duncan, on a leave of absence with his wife recovering from brain surgery, would be back during a nine-game homestand.

The 26-year-old Robinson batted .299 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 43 games in Memphis and made his first appearance in the majors since May 19, 2009. He sat out the majority of the 2010 season with a dislocated shoulder and has a plate in his head after sustaining face and hand injuries in an outfield collision with Andrew Brown on April 16.

''It was a nice surprise,'' Robinson said. ''It's kind of a dream come true again.''
