Cardinals cancel exhibition against Double-A club
The St. Louis Cardinals have canceled their exhibition game against their Double-A club in Springfield, Mo.
Although the major league roster was slated to be in Springfield, that exhibition was technically a split squad game on the spring training calendar. The forecast calls for rain and temperatures in the 30s in Springfield on Tuesday.
''We are very disappointed that we have to cancel the exhibition game, but we have a responsibility to ensure that our players have safe playing conditions,'' general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. ''Given the forecast, we do not feel we have any other choice than to cancel the game.''
The Cardinals said they would play two games in Springfield in 2012.
The Cardinals also have a Grapefruit League game against Florida in Jupiter scheduled for Tuesday. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Sunday the club was already considering leaving pitcher Jaime Garcia in Florida to make his scheduled start rather than expose him to the elements in Springfield.
Instead of fielding a team composed mostly of minor leaguers in Florida, the Cardinals will now have their full roster available in Jupiter.
