Bud Black fondly recalls his time with the Angels
With the Padres in Anaheim this week, manager Bud Black fondly recalled his days as pitching coach for the Angels from 2000-2006. According to Friar Wire, he said:
“The relationships I had here are still so strong to this day. Mike Scioscia, Joe Maddon, Ron Roenicke, Mickey Hatcher . . . great people and great friends. A lot of good stuff here for me.”
His tenure with the Angels included a 2002 World Series championship.
Black highlighted the “baseball dialogue” with his fellow Angel coaches. Per Friar Wire:
“The baseball dialogue was so passionate and everybody had a voice. I learned a lot from those guys over the years. We were all about the same age. We had a lot of the same interests. We had different opinions. There were great debates.”
Since those debates, Black has gone on to be one of the longest-tenured MLB managers after Mike Scioscia. Meanwhile, fellow coach Joe Maddon went on to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to their first and only World Series appearance after leaving the Angels.
