Buchholz guaranteed almost $30 million more by Sox

Clay Buchholz has been guaranteed just under $30 million in new money as part of a fresh agreement with the Boston Red Sox that runs through 2015.

The All-Star pitcher keeps the $550,000 salary for this year that was in the one-year deal he agreed to last month.

His new contract, which adds $29,945,000, gives him a $1 million signing bonus and calls for salaries of $3.5 million next year, $5.5 million in 2013, $7.7 million in 2014 and $12 million in 2015.

Boston has a $13 million option for 2016 with a $245,000 buyout. If that option is exercised, the Red Sox have a $13.5 million option for 2017 with a $500,000 buyout. Only the first buyout is guaranteed unless the 2016 option is exercised.

The 26-year-old Buchholz was second in the AL with a 2.33 ERA last year. In his career, Buchholz is 29-23 with a 3.77 ERA. He pitched a no-hitter in his second major league start.

This season, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA in two starts, including a 9-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday.
