Brewers to talk to Melvin
The Milwaukee Brewers plan to interview former Arizona and Seattle skipper Bob Melvin for their vacant managerial post, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Melvin also was a candidate in Milwaukee in 2002 when Ned Yost was hired, and once served as the Brewers bench coach under manager Phil Garner
. He has a 493-508 career record in six-plus seasons as a big-league manager.
The newspaper also reported that former Houston manager Cecil Cooper, a former Brewers player, has expressed interest in the position.
Pirates interview Sveum
Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum interviewed for the vacant Pittsburgh Pirates managerial job, a day after former Brewers skipper Ken Macha talked with Pittsburgh.
Sveum, who was Milwaukee's interim manager at the end of the 2008 season and in the Brewers' playoff series that year, played for the Pirates in 1996 and '97 and later managed in their minor-league system.
