Brewers RHP Marcum cuts start short

Published Mar. 18, 2011 12:06 a.m. ET

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Shaun Marcum left his start Thursday after pitching three innings because of tightness in his right shoulder.

Marcum retired the first six batters he faced and allowed only Alexei Ramirez's single leading off the third. He struck out two.

After the inning, Marcum retreated to the Brewers' right-field clubhouse with a member of the team's medical staff.

''I didn't want to push it and do something stupid,'' Marcum said. ''Between the second and third it tightened up a little bit. After the third we decided it was in my best interest not to back out there.''

Miwaukee acquired Marcum from the Toronto Blue Jays after he went 13-8 with a 3.64 ERA. He's allowed 15 hits in 11 2-3 innings this spring with a 4.63 ERA.

''If this were the regular season, especially August, September, I'd pitch through it and wouldn't say a word,'' Marcum said.
