Brewers' Gomez robs Votto, seals win

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez says he hasn't hit a walk-off homer, but he might have done one better on Monday night.

He made a walk-off, home-run robbery.

With the Brewers leading the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 with two outs and a man on first, Gomez timed a leap perfectly to rob Joey Votto of a home run at the wall to end the game.

Incredulous, Votto walked toward center demanding to see the ball as Gomez celebrated the catch — Votto certain it had cleared the fence.

Heck, even Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez was convinced it was as good as gone, stewing on the mound before Gomez had come down with it.

Afterward, Gomez was giddy, saying ''When you save the game like that or when you hit a walk-off home run, it's amazing. I never hit one, but I steal home run to win the game. It's something special, like you can't wait to get home to see it over and over.''

As for the victim of Monday night's heist? Votto had no hard feelings.

''The whole thing is really a random occurrence and it's what makes baseball so special," Votto said. "Carlos has had a fantastic year this year. Today he didn't have a good game offensively and he goes out and makes a game-changing play on the defensive end.

''You know, I did everything I could, and he made a great play.''

Next week, the two will be National League All-Star teammates on July 16 at Citi Field (7:30 p.m. ET on FOX). So at least on that night, Votto won't mind if Gomez keeps a long drive from leaving the yard.
