Beckett contrite as Red Sox report

Published Feb. 19, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett says he had ''lapses in judgment'' in the clubhouse last season during the team's historic September collapse.

Beckett spoke on Sunday, the day Red Sox pitchers and catchers reported to spring training. He was asked about a Boston Globe report that alleged starters, including himself, Jon Lester and John Lackey, drank beer and ate fried chicken in the clubhouse on their off days.

Beckett says he ''made mistakes in the clubhouse, and that's about as far as I'll go.''

He also said those mistakes did not affect his performance on the mound. Beckett gave up 12 earned runs in his final two starts against Baltimore and the Red Sox dropped 18 of their final 24 games to miss the playoffs.
