Baltimore Orioles: Orioles interview Alan Mills for pitching coach position

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

After Dave Wallace left the Baltimore Orioles for the Atlanta Braves, the Orioles have been trying to fill the pitching coach position. So far, there are a few candidates in the mix, including Double-A Bowie pitching coach Alan Mills.

Replacing former pitching coach Dave Wallace hasn’t been an easy task for the Baltimore Orioles.  However, it’s a task the Orioles plan on taking care of before they address their depleted roster.

The Orioles interviewed their Double-A Bowie pitching coach Alan Mills for the position, but he’s not the only one the Orioles are considering.

A candidate from outside the organization is St. Louis Cardinals minor league coordinator Tim Levesque, who has been with the Cards since 2013.

Levesque, who turns 37 next month, was the Cardinals mechanics analyst / minor league rehab coordinator prior to his promotion. Even though Levesque is a minor league coordinator, he does have experience as a pitching coach. Levesque was a pitching coach with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals in 2012, Single-A Quad Cities from 2010 to 2011, short-season Single-A Batavia in 2009 and rookie-league Johnson City in 2008.

The Orioles have also expressed interest in former Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell.

    Other Notes

Former Orioles first-round pick, Matt Hobgood was unable to launch a successful career as a Major League pitcher. But he’s planning an alternative route to the Major Leagues.

Hobgood plans to make the Major Leagues as a hitter. He’s currently working out with former Baltimore Oriole Larry Harlow.

Hobgood said the following about his potential return to the Major Leagues:

“The idea is to keep working on hitting over the next few months and then go to some tryouts at some point. Obviously, independent ball could be an option initially to then get back into minor league ball, but like I said, I’d regret not trying just because there’s a lot of power there. It’s just whether or not I can get it to translate to game situations. Lots of good 5 o’clock hitters out there.”
