Astros promote prospect Correa to Triple-A, big league debut draws nearer

20-year-old Shortstop Carlos Correa is one of the gems of the Houston Astros' immensely deep minor league system, and he took a step closer to being "MLB-ready" on Monday.

Correa was promoted to the Astros' Triple-A affiliate Fresno Grizzlies after essentially dominating in every aspect in his 29 games with the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks. In those games, Correa hit .385 while collecting seven home runs, 32 RBIs and posting a slugging percentage of .726.

Intriguingly, Houston thought about promoting Correa all the way to the big-league club before deciding on Triple-A.

“I have to say it is (tempting),” General Manager Jeff Luhnow told Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle. “It’s something we will continue to think about. Right now his next challenge is to face Triple-A pitching. He’s going to face some good Triple-A pitching. We want to see how he does against those clubs. They all have good pitching staffs he’ll be facing. There’s no doubt in my mind Carlos is a special player that he will help us.” 

As for Correa himself, he's ready to take the next step in his career. "You work your entire life to get at some point to the big leagues," Correa is quoted as saying about the news. “To get one step closer means a lot."

It's only a matter of time now before Correa joins the Astros' other talented young players at the Major League level.
