Astros hope off-day workout is slump-buster

Published Apr. 14, 2010 8:01 p.m. ET

The winless Houston Astros held a rare, optional workout on their day off, hoping to put an 0-7 start behind them.

Manager Brad Mills said nearly every player walked across the street from the team hotel for a Tuesday practice at Busch Stadium.

Mills said it was a relaxed atmosphere during the 90-minute session. He said he got a chance to relieve his frustration by throwing batting practice.

The Astros entered Wednesday night's game against St. Louis trailing the majors in runs (13) and home runs (2).

Mills wasn't sure what effect it would have on his team, but figured it couldn't hurt. By not making it a mandatory workout, he sent a signal to players that he wasn't upset with them.
