Angels win sixth straight at Fenway

Tommy Hanson kept David Ortiz from beating him. The Los Angeles Angels prevented Boston from stopping them, too.

Mark Trumbo and Erick Aybar each drove in two runs and the Angels posted their team-record sixth straight win at Fenway Park, beating the Red Sox 9-5 Saturday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Hanson (3-2) allowed two runs in five innings for the win, striking out David Ortiz twice and getting him to ground out weakly with two runners in three at-bats.

''The first at-bat he didn't look very good on the breaking ball. I felt like I threw him a really good one,'' Hanson said. ''Same with the second at-bat. That third time around with the tying run on third, I'd rather face Ortiz in that situation than (Dustin) Pedroia, who hit two line drives on me. I threw him a first-pitch slider and he grounded out, which worked out for me.''

Ortiz went 0 for 5 and stranded six runners. In his previous game, he hit a game-ending, three-run homer against Texas.

''Tommy was on the edge it seemed like the whole game - a lot of base runners and it's a tough lineup to give up a lot of opportunities,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ''But when he needed to make pitches, he did and was grinding it out for five innings.''

The Angels built a big lead when reliever Franklin Morales walked three straight batters and allowed four runs in the seventh inning, making it 7-2.

''Their pitchers were missing some spots and we were disciplined enough to draw some bases-loaded walks and we scored a lot of runs with two outs, which was good in the seventh inning to break the game open,'' Scioscia said.

Boston manager John Farrell was just hoping to get Morales into a game for the first time since May 30. He started the season on the disabled list with a strained lower back.

''I felt like it was an opportunity to get him some work in advance of a potential spot start next week,'' Farrell said. ''Then, obviously, we saw what happened in the seventh inning - lost the strike zone as we got deeper into (the inning) and that ended up being the difference in today's game.''

Mike Trout added a pair of doubles high off the Green Monster and collected three hits for the Angels.

The Angels went 6-0 overall against the Red Sox last season. Los Angeles won its ninth consecutive game against Boston in the clubs' first meeting this year.

The game was a makeup from Friday night's rainout.

Mike Carp had a solo homer, three hits and drove in two runs for Boston. Daniel Nava added three hits.

Felix Doubront (4-3) gave up three runs and six hits over six innings. It was his second good start, having allowed one run in six innings of his previous one.

''A little bit surprised, but it's the manager's decision,'' he said of being pulled after 97 pitches. ''At that moment I was feeling good, though.''

The Red Sox stranded eight runners in the first four innings- two in each - and 14 overall. Boston made it closer by scoring three runs with two outs in the ninth.

Ernesto Frieri struck out Jacoby Ellsbury with runners on first and third for his 14th save.

Los Angeles held a 3-2 lead until Morales' wildness in the seventh. Trumbo had an RBI double before the left-hander threw nine consecutive balls to end his appearance and forcing home the final two runs. Clayton Mortensen relieved and allowed Aybar's infield hit that made it 7-2 before J.B. Shuck hit a flyball for his second out of the inning to end it.

Trout opened the third with a double, Josh Hamilton walked and they pulled off a double steal. Albert Pujols had a sacrifice fly and Hamilton scored when Trumbo's grounder into a drawn-in infield ticked off shortstop Stephen's Drew diving attempt and over to Pedroia at second, and he threw to first for an out.
