Angels get Brendan Ryan from Nats for cash considerations

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:09 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) The Washington Nationals say they have traded infielder Brendan Ryan to the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.

The Nationals announced the deal Tuesday. Ryan has been at Triple-A Syracuse in 2016 after signing with Washington in February.

The swap comes a day after the Angels said shortstop Andrelton Simmons needs surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb.

Simmons was hurt Sunday. He was batting .219 with a home run and eight RBIs this season.

The 33-year-old Ryan has played in parts of nine major league seasons for the Cardinals, Mariners and Yankees, starting games at shortstop, second base, third base and outfield. He has a .234 career batting average.
