Angels 5, Athletics 4

Published May. 2, 2013 1:17 a.m. ET

Mark Trumbo enjoyed a pretty good April. May is shaping up the same way.

Trumbo hit a home run for the third consecutive day, Howie Kendrick and Mike Trout also homered and the Los Angeles Angels ended a four-game losing streak, beating the Oakland Athletics 5-4 on Wednesday.

''A win's a win,'' Trumbo said. It was probably more of a nail-biter than we would have liked. This team hangs around and they'll find a way to get back in it if you let them. You just have to keep your foot on the gas pedal and try to pound them into submission before they get their second wind.''

Trumbo carries a .301 batting average into the Angels' series opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. It's not surprising. He's a career .283 hitter in April. He nearly doubled his home run production in the month this season.

Trumbo has even better stats in May, his .323 average the best of any month.

''Trum is definitely finding his comfort level in the box,'' Angels' manager Mike Scioscia said. ''It's good to see from some guys. Trum, Mike and Howie got in the act today and we needed every one of them.''

C.J. Wilson (3-0) remained undefeated despite walking a season-high five hitters. He allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1-3 innings. Wilson struck out five and stranded six Oakland runners in scoring position.

''It was just frustrating because I feel like I made some really good pitches,'' Wilson said. ''Give credit where it's due. Those guys, if they got to two strikes, they foul a lot of pitches off or they took some close pitches. That's a good baseball team. I'm just trying to stay on top of my game and not give in.''

Josh Donaldson, Nate Freiman and Luke Montz each had an RBI double for the A's, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Adam Rosales also drove in a run.

''We had the potential winning run at the plate,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''We gave ourselves a chance.''

Tommy Milone (3-3) gave up four runs on seven hits over seven innings. He did not walk a batter and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts. Milone has lost three consecutive starts.

''I wanted to go as deep into the game as I could,'' Milone said. ''The bullpen has been out there a lot the last few days. I needed to go out and throw strikes. I felt good throughout the game, it was just a few bad pitches.''

Kendrick gave the Angels a 1-0 lead when he homered over the center field fence with two outs in the second.

Donaldson and Freiman hit back-to-back doubles to give the A's a 2-1 lead in the third but J.B. Shuck singled in a run to tie it in the fifth.

Trout led off the sixth with a home run and Trumbo hit a ball off the top of the out-of-town scoreboard one out later. It was originally ruled a double but following a television review he was awarded the home run.

Trout tripled to center - Yoenis Cespedes slipped on the warning track - and scored on Luis Pujols' sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 5-2.

Michael Kohn walked a hitter to lead off the eighth and was replaced by Scott Downs, who got an out and then gave up Montz's RBI double and Rosales' run-scoring single before exiting the game with an injury to his right side.

Closer Ernesto Frieri came in to record the final five outs for his fourth save in five chances.

The Angels avoided being swept by the A's in Oakland for the first time since June 29-July 1, 2004.

The A's lost for the first time in 23 games against the Angels when scoring at least four runs.

Frieri hit Cespedes to open the ninth but Hank Conger threw him out trying to steal. After Donaldson walked, Monday night hero Brandon Moss came up as a pinch hitter and flied out to left field.

Frieri walked Josh Reddick but got pinch hitter Eric Sogard to foul out.

Montz played in his first major league game in five years. He was with the Washington Nationals in 2008.

''I had to step out of the batter's box the first time up and calm myself down,'' Montz said. ''The double felt great. It was nerves time but that's when I felt I belonged here. I want to be here.''
