Angels 3B Escobar leaves with injury after fielding grounder

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 11:56 p.m. ET

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Third baseman Yunel Escobar has left the Los Angeles Angels' game against the Houston Astros in the third inning after getting hurt while fielding a grounder.

Escobar appeared to injure one of his hands when Marwin Gonzalez's fast-moving hit deflected off him Sunday.

The Angels didn't immediately announce the nature of Escobar's injury.

Escobar is batting .307 with three homers and 13 RBIs mostly as the leadoff hitter in his debut season with the Angels, who acquired him last winter from the Washington Nationals.

The Angels have been beset by injuries this season. They lost shortstop Andrelton Simmons for several weeks when he tore a ligament in his left thumb while fielding earlier this month.

Kaleb Cowart moved from first base to third, and C.J. Cron replaced Cowart.
