Alvarez drives in 5 as Orioles and Rays play to 8-8 tie

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) Pedro Alvarez drove in five runs with a grand slam and double, Mark Trumbo hit a two-run shot and the Baltimore Orioles and Cuba-bound Tampa Bay Rays played to an 8-8 tie on Sunday.

Alvarez, who recently signed with the Orioles, hit his first home run of the spring in the second inning. Trumbo hit his third home run in the third.

Chris Tillman, who missed his first start for Baltimore with a strained hip, allowed three runs on five hits in four innings. He gave up back-to-back home runs to Logan Morrison and Evan Longoria in the third.

Steven Souza Jr. hit a grand slam off T.J. McFarland in the Rays fifth to tie it at 7. The game was called after nine innings.

The Rays are scheduled to leave from Tampa for Havana to play the Cuban national team on Tuesday in the first game by an American team there since the Orioles visited in 1999.
