Agent seeks multi-year deal for Ordonez

The current asking price for free agent outfielder Magglio Ordonez is at least two years at $10 million or more per season, a major league source told FOXSports.com.

The Detroit Tigers have interest in retaining Ordonez, who turns 37 before Opening Day. But it won’t be easy. The Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies are among the teams looking to add a right-handed-hitting outfielder.

Ordonez’s agent, Scott Boras, just negotiated a seven-year contract for fellow outfielder Jayson Werth. If anything, that will embolden Boras to stick with his demands.

“Magglio is a guy that has gotten a lot of interest from a lot of teams, now that Jayson has signed,” Boras told reporters today. “He’s a middle-of-the-order guy. Great batting average. Productive guy. A veteran player. A winner.

“There are a lot of things about Magglio that fit a broad base of teams. Once Jayson signed, a lot of teams interested in Jayson are now interested in Magglio.”

The Red Sox and Phillies were among the teams interested in Werth before he joined the Washington Nationals. If clubs are wary of Boras’ price, the trade options include Carlos Beltran and Josh Willingham.

Ordonez batted .303 with 12 home runs and 59 RBI in 84 games this year before sustaining a right ankle fracture that cost him the remainder of the season. Boras and others have said Ordonez is healthy now. WEEI.com reported he's working out for interested teams today.
