San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan apparently will be reuniting with Brian Hoyer. The Niners will sign the veteran quarterback when free agency officially begins Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Hoyer played under Shanahan with the Browns in 2014, when he was the offensive coordinator. The 31-year-old quarterback had one of the better seasons of his career that year, throwing for a career-high 3,326 yards in 14 games.

Hoyer spent last season with the Bears but was placed on injured reserve when he suffered a broken arm after just six games. The veteran QB looked good before the injury, completing 67 percent of his attempts while throwing six touchdown passes and no interceptions.

The move gives the 49ers, who had no QBs under contract for 2017, some insurance at the position heading into free agency.

The Niners also added some depth at receiver a day before the start of free agency, agreeing to a deal with speedy wideout Marquise Goodwin.

Goodwin had a career-high 29 catches for 431 receiving yards last year with the Bills, whom he played with during his first four seasons in the league.
