The Mississippi State men’s basketball team has a new head coach.

The Bulldogs, who fired Rick Ray last week, have reportedly hired former UCLA coach Ben Howland.

The news was first reported by ESPN college basketball insider Jeff Goodman.

“Ben Howland has reached a verbal agreement to become the Mississippi State coach, sources told ESPN,” Goodman wrote on Twitter Monday morning. “He is en route to Starkville now. That’s a pretty nice hire for MSU, which has struggled to compete in the SEC in recent seasons.”

Howland, 57, brings a strong resume to Starkville. The former Bruins coach led UCLA to three straight Final Fours from 2006-08. The Bulldogs haven’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
