Zack Kassian made eligible after time in substance abuse program, then waived
Montreal Canadiens forward Zack Kassian was reinstated following time in Stage Two of the NHL's substance abuse program and was then promptly placed on waivers by the Canadiens on Tuesday.
Kassian enrolled in the program shortly after he was involved in an early-morning single-car crash back in October. The 24-year-old broke his foot and his nose as a result of the crash, and Montreal GM Marc Bergevin blasted Kassian for a "lack of character" following the accident.
Although Kassian is now eligible to play, his NHL future is in doubt. He went unclaimed on waivers, and the Canadiens sent Kassian down to the St. John Ice Caps where he likely will have to prove himself both on and off the ice to the Canadiens' brass before earning an NHL chance with the team.
