Report: Patriots work out WR Hakeem Nicks, two others

Published Oct. 13, 2015 11:25 a.m. ET

For their 30-6 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, the New England Patriots had just three wide receivers active. Clearly, it wasn't an issue as the offense was still able to put up 30 points on the Cowboys, but the lack of depth at the position is somewhat of a concern.

On Monday, the Patriots took a small step towards fixing that issue by working out Hakeem Nicks, according to NESN. Nicks was among three players to work out for the Patriots, with running back Isaiah Pead and tight end Nick Kasa being the others.

Nicks last played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2014 after playing five seasons with the New York Giants. Last season, Nicks had the worst year of his career, catching just 38 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns.

There's no indication that the Patriots are going to sign Nicks, but it is interesting that New England plays the Colts on Sunday. Last week, the Patriots also worked out former Colts running back Boom Herron, which could just be a coincidence.

Pead came into the league with the St. Louis Rams as a second-round pick in 2012, but has carried the ball just 19 times in his career. Kasa is in a similar boat, as he caught just one pass with the Oakland Raiders after being a sixth-round pick in 2013, though it did go for a 9-yard touchdown.
