Report: Odom shot in home invasion

Published Aug. 22, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

NFL free agent defensive end Antwan Odom was shot early Monday during an invasion of his Alabama home, WKRG-TV reported.

Odom, 29, suffered a "flesh wound" to his upper right thigh, according to his public relations representative.

He has been released from the hospital and is back at his home in Irvington, 20 miles south of Mobile.

Odom was shot after a man, who police identified as Tony Gildersleeve, entered the home through an unlocked door at 4:30am local time. Gildersleeve allegedly fired a .410-gauge shotgun twice, hitting the wall on the first shot before striking Odom's leg with the second blast.

Gildersleeve turned himself in to police several hours following the incident, according to WKRG.

Odom, who starred at the University of Alabama, was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in Tennessee before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals as a free agent in 2008. His three seasons in Cincinnati were marred by injuries, however, and he was cut by the team in July.
