New Chargers QB Rettig gets to learn from an idol in Rivers

Chase Rettig's tutor just happens to be a quarterback he grew up idolizing.

The Chargers' new reserve played high school ball in San Clemente, Calif. and watching his favorite team's new passer, Philip Rivers.

Years later, the Boston College product gets to sit behind a veteran Rivers and soak in all he can.

"I’m relishing the opportunity to learn from him," Rettig told the team's official website. "You’ve got to."

Rivers has been more than gracious with his time. When Rettig first arrived from Green Bay, Rivers welcomed him to a meeting with rookie running back Melvin Gordon.

The three players reviewed the playbook together. And Rettig knew then he had an awesome opportunity to improve his game by doing as Rivers does.

"Philip has been forward about if I have any questions, just to let him know," Rettig said. "A big thing for me is just watching practice, knowing what play they are in and seeing how Philip does it. Seeing how he operates it and what he is getting into."

It's invaluable experience for any quarterback. Rettig is just enjoying the ride a little more, given his ties to the area and his tutor.

"I rooted for the Chargers and watched Philip Rivers and LT," he said. So obviously, how cool is it that I am pretty much home?"
