Chiefs two injured tackles are really close to returning

Published Aug. 31, 2015 11:54 a.m. ET

The Chiefs finally received some good news on their patchwork preseason line.

Both left tackle Eric Fisher (ankle) and right tackle Jeff Allen (knee) appear close to a return, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher. Both blockers were spotted at practice for the first time in weeks.

Fisher suffered an ankle sprain in practice two weeks ago and hasn't suited up since. His return would put Donald Stephenson in a more familiar swing tackle role.

Allen's return would provide a similar upgrade over current emergency starter Paul Fanaika. The right tackle hasn't played a down since the first preseason game.

Neither Fisher nor Allen should see another exhibition down. Andy Reid won't play his starters long in Thursday's preseason finale -- he'd rather Fisher and Allen heal up for J.J. Watt and Co. in Week 1.
